Following a successful career as a fashion editor, Nicola Elliot decided on a change of direction. With a focus on wellbeing, she trained as an aromatherapist and nutritionist, before founding one of our favourite brands, Neom Organics. She shares how her tips on how to achieve a work-life balance work with us.

WHAT'S YOUR MORNING ROUTINE?

I don’t really have a routine – each day varies! When I’m at home and not travelling for work, I’m up at 6am so I can go for a run while the kids are asleep. Running really clears my head and helps me get ready for the day. Then it’s usually a fight between me, my husband and the kids to get in the shower first! When everyone’s dressed and fed, it’s a rush to get them to school on time. I’ll make business calls on my way to the office, as I head up the Creative side and there’s always something new going on. Once I’m at work, I’m in back-to-back meetings until I leave.

WHAT'S THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR DAY?

When I’m at home with the kids and we’re all in our PJs reading or watching TV on the sofa!

WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED IN YOUR CAREER, AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME THEM?

I’ve faced so many challenges, and experienced loads of mistakes and heaps of setbacks. But I think getting ahead in business is all about getting on with it – don’t dwell on problems and make finding solutions your priority. For women generally, a big challenge is juggling a career with children. Women are often torn between progressing their career and holding the fort at home. We need more amazing male role models who set an example through job sharing and split paternity/maternity.

HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED?

It’s easier to stay motivated when you don’t pile pressure on yourself. I live by the 80/20 rule, so I try to do things that enhance my life with minimum effort and maximum pleasure. I don’t force myself to exercise when I don’t feel like it, instead I’ll choose something else from my ‘wellbeing toolkit’ that will make me feel good! I really believe there are small steps you can take each day to help you feel your best; the small steps that make the big difference!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN WHO WANT TO FEEL MORE EMPOWERED IN THE WORKPLACE?

Make yourself heard! If you’ve got a great idea, don’t be afraid to shout about it. Or if you don’t know something, learn about it. There are plenty of resources out there to educate yourself; get online and read! I came across this quote, which really resonated with me: “She was unstoppable. Not because she did not have failures, or doubts, but because she continued on despite them”. I think it’s so apt.

WHO DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?

My sister. She’s totally got her priorities right and is a great laugh!

WHAT'S YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?

Having two wonderful, kind, smart, hilarious children.

IF YOU HADN'T FOUNDED NEOM ORGANIC, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?

I was a journalist before I started Neom and I’ve always wanted to write a book, so I’d probably be a writer.

HOW DO YOU UNWIND?

Taking care of myself and my wellbeing is one of my high priorities, so I always make sure I take time to unwind properly after a long day. Women need to stop feeling guilty for taking time for themselves – it’s so important! My ultimate wind-down routine (which isn’t always possible) is: banish all electricals after 9pm, light the Neom Tranquillity candle in my bedroom, have a warm bath filled with the Perfect Night’s Sleep Bath Foam, read a book for 20 minutes, take two magnesium capsules and spritz my pillow with the Perfect Night’s Sleep Pillow Mist. After that I’m out like a light!

WHERE IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE?

The Harrogate countryside with my kids, husband and Harry the dog!

WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU HIGHLY RECOMMEND?

Oh I’ve got loads of recommendations – I’m a serious bookworm! I really loved reading Sheryl Sandberg Option B or Lean In.

TOWN, COUNTRY
OR COAST

All of them! I live in Harrogate which is a spa town in North Yorkshire. We love walking in the countryside at the weekends, but who doesn’t love a hot beach holiday?
